Guest Curator for the section "Performative Doc" (screening & exhibition)
To open up a new platform to rethink this parallel connection and correlation, “Performative Doc” unfolds in ways of screenings and exhibition in order to demonstrate a constructive dialogue between different art practices and suggest a varied viewing experience to the audience.
"Performative Doc" is a prominent documentary form in recent years, which refers to the active participation of the filmmakers in the film, leading the audience through cinematic intervention with personal perspectives. Documentary does not deploys objective truth while performative documentary pays attention to the micro-voice of individuals and the intersection with the socio-historical trajectory, challenging our existing singularity of thoughts in the moving images.
We adopt this concept to react to the current context, in order to generate multi-faceted and transgressive connections. For our context, lets begin with our first connection between dance and moving images. Dance film evolved along with the transformation of social environment and technology, and it is not only a form to document dance but its an organic integration of these two art forms.
In the section of Performative Doc, we expand our imagination of dance images through "performativity"- In which the idea of "performativity" expands the imagination of dance, suggesting possible disruption of dance construction in traditional sense, while juxtaposing the intervention of body and the fluidity of self-consciousness in movement and space. Hence, either in "Space and Border", "Rite of Passage" or "Expanded Space", we began the selection of works with the discourse of dance or performance in mind, and beyond.
"Space and Border" explores the interrelation between body, external communities, space and even ethnicity and national border. "Rite of Passage" responses to Judith Butler's notion of "gender performance", indicating the agency of identity where gender is socially constructed that change over time.
The second connection for us is screening and exhibition. "Performative Doc" extends from screening to exhibition / installation nature in "Expanded Space". The interplay between traditional cinema screening and an exhibition art space create a compelling contrast and the juxtaposition of the two different spatial contexts aspire to provide audience with a more diverse sensory experience. Lastly, through Performative Doc, we hope to invite creators, dance practitioners and audience to form a closer bonding, and to move, jump and cultivate in our beloved city.
“Performative Doc”
